A Three Deep Hole and an Inconvenient Truth

A Three Deep Hole and Inconvenient Truth Vlog Transcript

Hello Everybody, Tom Bickimer here, and today I want to talk about Climate Change.  Now hold on, I hear the groans out there, but I promise to be at least as interesting as Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, and not nearly as long.

So, on my eleventh birthday, my parents gave me a basketball goal, which was quite awesome except that I was assigned the task of digging the hole for the basketball pole to stand in.  My birthday is towards the end of March, and this goes back far enough in time when the winter, like the one we just had in Kansas City, was the rule rather than the exception and usually lasting well into March.  I quickly discovered that the ground was still frozen as I enthusiastically began the task of digging a three foot deep hole.  Enthusiasm; however, quickly turned to grim labor, accompanied by blisters and the bleak prospect that it might take until July before I got to shoot my first basket.

Fast forward a couple of decades………  Alright, maybe more like five decades, and Kansas City just experienced the wettest month of May ever recorded.  Icebergs are melting, polar caps are receding, and you don’t have to have a PHD in Ecology to conclude that climate change is a real thing.  There is no question that our environment has suffered through years of neglect.  Consequently, our climate is just not the same as it was when I turned eleven years-old.

Well, I’m here to tell you that the housing industry in general, and Bickimer Homes, in particular, has been doing something about that.  Our new homes are better insulated and more efficiently heated and cooled than they have ever been in the 37 years we’ve been building houses.  Erosion control standards, preservation of trees and green spaces, abundant landscaping, and much more are all part of the Bickimer Homes building process.

We believe we have a responsibility to protect our environment for our children and our children’s children.  Bickimer Homes has been building for families for nearly four decades.  Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, we hope to be doing the same for many years to come.
