Packing up the Things that Matter

Packing up the Things that Matter Vlog Transcript

Hello everybody, Tom Bickimer here, and today I want to talk a little bit about moving.

It’s been almost a year, now, since we moved my mom into an assisted living facility.  While there was no way around it, this was still a bittersweet moment for mom and my sisters and me.  We found her a nice place, as these things go, and offering the care she needs, but she will tell you there is no place like home.

Recently, my family decided to sell her house, acknowledging the finality of the reality that mom wouldn’t be returning home.

The house sold quickly, and we had to act just as quickly to clear everything out to make way for the Buyer.  A short time to decide what to keep, what to give to family members, what to sell, what to pitch.  Decisions that ultimately came down to weighing the practical versus the sentimental.

Mom was a frugal woman, she had to be as a single parent raising five kids.  So, honestly, there wasn’t much in the way of material value.  No, the real value was in those pieces that bear her family’s memories.  To be sure, we took great care to safely pack those away.  There is the “stuff,” and then there is the treasure that will one day be discovered by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I mention all of this because those of us at Bickimer Homes understand how difficult the process of moving can be.  We understand the emotional commitment and physical energy it takes to pack up the practical and the priceless.  Whether our customers are a young couple building their first home, or families needing a bigger home, or empty nesters looking to downsize, the process of moving inevitably is a watershed moment in their lives.  We promise to never forget that.  Bickimer Homes, building dreams on a solid foundation since 1982.

Oh, and mom, if you should happen to see this, home is where the heart is, and there is no bigger heart than yours.
